WORKERS AT WAIOURU
DEMAND FOR HIGHER PAY NOT PRESSED • GO SLOW TACTICS DROPPED. FOLLOWING ON MEETING (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, August 30. Though they had made a demand for increased pay, men. on the construction Avork at Waiouru military camp agreed to continue at existing rates as a result of a meeting on Wednesday night. ■The meeting was addressed by Mr C. L. Hunter, liaison officer for the Minister of Labour, Mr Webb.
The demand was made in a circular issued by the delegates’ committee of the men and sent to all contractors and sub-contractors at the camp on Wednesday.
Signed by M. G. Conrad, the circular was as follows: “This is to notify you that .till you increase rates of pay of all Avorkers in your employ by an additional 3d an hour on present rates, hours of work shall be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with one hour for lunch and work will be carried on on five, days of the Aveek, that is Monday to Friday only. The delegates’ committee will be available for consultation up to 10.30 p.m. today and up to 8 a.m. in the morning.”
Go sloav tactics Avere adopted by a section of the men on Wednesday', but in keep Avith the decision at the meeting all worked at normal speed today, and no trouble whatever was experienced.
It Avas stated that most of the men earn about £8 10s for a 57-hour week, and they have their board provided. A large section of the men, it Avas added, Avere not in favour of the increased demands, benig quite satisfied Avith existing conditions.
