OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS
A PENNY PLANE FUND (To the Editor.) Sir, —When the 8.8. C. told us a trawler’s gunner had shot down two enemy bombers with three shots, we got a large-sized thrill and day after day we are getting similar thrills, most of them from the R.A.F. As a mark of our deep appreciation of those thrills, how would it do to start a penny ante fund—a penny for each plane shot down? Of course when the score runs to close on 200 for the day, that would take some doing for us who have little of the world’s wealth. Quite so; but we could put in as many pennies as we could —call it a penny a dozen for us.
As to collection of the pence the Government would have its chance to do its good deed —in fact two deeds—by printing a 2d stamp of the old convenient size half for postage and half for the plane fund (for letter post a 3d stamp—2d postage and Id plane). Call it “Churchill’s Relish" or any other name and let it present a picture of a "busted” Nazi plane. The pennies would be entirely voluntary and would not cause the same pain in extraction as Mr Nash’s extra Is in the pound, but would bring, in quite a lot of money to a good cause. Thanking you for your space. —I am, etc.,
STANLEY FLETCHER Masterton, August 28.
