Replying to an appeal for help from the French colony of Noumea, the Minister of External Affairs, Mr J. McEwen, in a statement, declared that Australia was intensely interested in the economic welfare of New Caledonia and was making arrangements for closer liaison by the despatch of a Government representative. Australia was also considering a request for the establishment of an Australian bank in that colony.
