GERMAN PRISONER
ESCAPE FROM ONTARIO CAMP. GREAT MANHUNT ORGANISED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) MONTREAL, August 20. Somewhere in Ontario, the police reported, a powerful radio transmitting set was found under the roof of one of the internment camps. Armed forces are seeking a German prisoner whe tore up the boards of a room, tunnelled his way under two buildings and under the barbed wire surrounding the camp and came up in a cornfield. It is believed the prisoner changed into civilian clothes in the cornfield and escaped. He is described as a surly, dangerous character. The area is being combed in the course of Ontario’s greatest manhunt.
HELP FROM OUTSIDE WOOD TIMBERING OBTAINED FOR TUNNEL. (Received This Day, 9 a.m.) Somewhere in Ontario, August 20. It is believed that the escaped internee obtained wood for a three-feet high tunnel from other workers. The careful construction suggests that a general exodus was planned while the guards were off duty or asleep above the prisoner, as he crawled to freedom. The military believe that he received help from outside.
