FIRE AT NURSES’ HOME
DRYING ROOM AND CLOTHING DAMAGED.
Damage to the washhouse and drying racks at the Nurses’ Home was caused by a fire which broke out yesterday afternoon. The Masterton Fire Brigade received the call at 4.20 o’clock and one engine and four men under Superintendent T. B. Clark turned out. Although it was necessary to bring a hose into operation, the fire was quickly brought under control.
Besides the washhouse and drying racks, a quantity of clothing was damaged by fire while the bathroom and conveniences suffered from the effects of smoke. It is supposed that some clothing must have fallen on to the electric heater and the concentrated heat caused the fire.
The Nurses’ Home is a comparatively new concrete building of three stories, standing on the Masterton Hospital grounds in Blair Street.
