PARKVALE GATHERING

PRESENTATIONS TO SOLDIERS Despite the inclement weather con- . ditions there was a large attendance at the Parkvale Hall last evening when a number of soldiers were entertained by residents of the district. Dancing was enjoyed to music supplied by Mrs V. J. Ashton. Carterton and W. Harding, Masterton. Mr Dan Jensen was an efficient M.C.. Much appreciated vocal items were rendered by Mrs W. M. Worsfold and Mr D. J. Irwin, both being encored. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Pte D. Alexander and Mrs Herrick, a lucky spot dance by Miss A. Franks and Mr J. Churchouse. At a suitable interval in the proceedings, Mr C. Jensen, sen., sai.d that he was pleased to see such a large gathering of residents to entertain the soldiers. The residents of Parkvale and the district were proud to be associated with the boys who had enlisted. Ho knew they would worthily uphold the honour of their districts and the British flag. He hoped that when the war was over they would all return to their homes covered with glory and again be given a welcome home. He had great pleasure in handing a wristlet watch each to Privates C. Bliss, B. Wilson, D. Alexander, L. Smith, T. Jury and Gordon Campbell. Mrs B. Renall, president of the Women's Division of the Farmers Union, presented each soldier with a parcel of knitted comforts.

On behalf of the Young Farmers’ Club. Mr Alan Fisher asked two of their members, Privates Bliss and T. Jury to accept a cigarette case each. The audience then sang •'For They Are Jolly Good Fellows.” Dancing was resumed. The gathering was brought to a close with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” Supper was served by a ladies’ committee. and was greatly appreciated. The hall was tastefully decorated for the occasion with flags of the British Empire.
