CARTERTON
FAREWELL GATHERING PRESENTATION TO MR A. LAWRENCE. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a very representative gathering of citizens including several ladies and the member for the district. Mr B. Roberts, present at the Borough Council Chambers, Carterton. last evening, when occasion was taken to farewell Mr Alan Lawrence, youngest son of Mr J. A. B. Lawrence and the late Mrs Lawrence. The Mayor. Mr D. L. Taverner, who presided, said that he was pleased to see such a representative gathering. They had met for the purpose of saying farewell, God Speed and a safe return to Mr Alan Lawrence, who had been born, and received his education, in Carterton. Mr Lawrence would shortly leave to link up with a special arm of the air force and would receive training with the British Navy. Mr Taverner said that he felt sure Mr Lawrence would fill the bill in the work that was ahead of him. He had been a first class athlete and would be a worthy representative of the Borough of Carterton. They all felt proud of their guest. He wished Mr Lawrence the best of luck and at the end of his service a safe return to Carterton. Mr Taverner then handed Mr Lawrence a fountain pen and pencil amid applause and the singing of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow." Mr Lawrence returned thanks to the Mayor for his kind words and for the gift he had received from the people of Carterton. He hoped his mission to the Homeland would be the means of his bringing down at least one Nazi plane.
