WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
COMPETITION WINNERS The Carterton Women’s Institute met in the Masonic Hall yesterday afternoon, when there was a good attendance of members. As the meeting was in charge of the Drama Circle, Mrs H. M. B. Trapp occupied the chair. The meeting opened with the Ode to Friendship and Aspiration followed by the prayer for peace. Mrs A. Knutson read the report of the previous meeting, and Mrs P. Beere the treasurer's report. A letter was received from the New Zealand Institute for the Blind asking that the Carterton Institute take charge of the sale of basketware at the A. & P. Show and this was agreed to. The Red Cross Society wrote thanking the members for the assistance given in the way of knitted articles, etc. The Women's Patriotic Committee also wrote thanking the members for the splendid response made by them to the Lady Galway Guild appeal. Two new members were elected. , Mrs H. Knutson congratulated Miss Wolters on being elected to the Dominion Executive Committee, and also on being appointed the Hon. Dominion Treasurer. On behalf of the members Mrs Knutson asked her to accept a dainty shoulder spray. Miss Wolters reported on the recent Council meeting held in Wellington on July 24 and 25. and among other matters gave a resume of a talk by Mr Hayden. Dominion Secretary of the National Patriotic Board.
The competitions were won as follows: —Posy made from sweets, Mrs R. J. Grimmer 1, Mrs W. S. Steven 2. Mrs G. StefTerl, 3. Air Force balaclava. Mrs G. Steffcrt 1. Mrs Skelley 2. Ginger gems, Mrs G. Steffert 1. Mrs H. Knutson 2. The comnetitions were judged by Mrs S. R. S. Gallon and Mrs McCarthy, who were the recipients of dainty shoulder sprays. A competition involving the making of as many words as possible from
the letters in "Drama Circle” was won by Miss Wolters, who received a trophy donated by Mrs J. Archer. The competition for the ham donated by Mr and Mrs H. J. Brown, was won by Mrs C. E. Stevens.
A play entitled “Oh. my hat,” was performed by members of the Drama Circle and as usual was well staged and acted by Mesdames W. S. Steven. F. Peters, A. Knutson and P. Beere.
Community singing was enjoyed and the singing of God Save the King brought a pleasant gathering to a close.
