PUBLIC MEETING AT APIA. ORIGINAL COMMITTEE STRENGTHENED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) APIA. August 7. A public meeting was held to consider Western Samoa’s war effort. to hear the report of a committee previously set up, and to elect a permanent committee to continue the efforts to raise £5090. In little over a week £673 has been received, and there are good prospects of securing the full amount.

The original committee was reelected with the addition of further members, including three leading Samoan high chiefs, Malictoa, Tamasese and Mataafa. The Acting-Administra-tor. Mi- A. C. Turnbull, was elected chairman of the committee.

Captain H. M. Rushworth, formerly member of Parliament for the Bay of Islands, gave an interesting address on his experiences in the Great War and on some aspects of the present war.
