WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

SOLWAY—MANAIA. ENJOYABLE BIRTHDAY PARTY. ("Times-Age" Special.) Mis Munn presided over a very enjoyable gathering of members and friends at the sth brithday party of the Solway-Manaia Institute yesterday. The meeting opened with the Institute song “Comrades and Friends,” followed by the Aspirations. Ode to Friendship and the “Prayer for Peace.” Mis Munn then welcomed the members and their friends and said that she hoped that they would spend a pleasant time.

A dainty afternoon tea was served by the members of the executive.

After afternoon tea a short playreading was given by some of the members. The cast of the play “Dresden China." was as follows:—Mrs Pascoe (played by Mrs Munn). Alice (Mrs Scrivener). Clara (Mrs K. McGovern). Ruth (Mrs Reynolds), Amy (Mrs Whittaker), Constance (Mrs Henderson), Martha (Mrs Woollett). A dialogue entitled “A Pound of Theory" was then given by Mrs Church and Mrs Whittaker.

A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Church for her valuable assistance in coaching the ladies taking part in the play.

Points prizes were handed to the ladies who had entered into the competitions during the year. The winners were: Most points, Mrs Catton; sewing and knitting, Mrs Groombridge; potatoes competition. Mrs McAllister (28 lbs); flowers, Mrs Catton and Mrs Scrivener, equal 1; cooking, Mrs Nicholls.

The gathering was brought to a close by the singing of the National Anthem. The hostesses for next month are;— Mesdames Carr. Foster, Thompson, Taylforth. The roll call will be Scotch Jokes, and the competitions, cooking, pikelets and flowers, best daffodil.
