ALFREDTON
CARD PARTY IN AID OF PATRIOTIC FUNDS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The fortnightly card party in aid of patriotic funds was well attended. Competitions were finalised, the winners being: Rooster (donated by Mr O. Walker), Mr R. W. Kebbell. who donated it to be sold for the funds. Mrs Didsbury finally purchasing the bird. Fox terrier puppies (donor, Mr McLeod), Bernel Rolls and Mr J. H. McDonald. Eggs (donor. Mrs F. Johnston) sold to Mr R. Dagg. Ham (donor, Mr B. Galbraith), Mr S. Price. The competitions realised altogether £4 3s. while the total profit on the gathering was £lO 2s 9d. The winners'of the cards were: Ladies, Mrs G. Clarkson 1, Mrs Hall <2. Men, Messrs Clarkson and G. Godinagh equal 1. The prizes were tickets for the pictures, again, donated by Mr and Mrs Foreman to whom the committee express their thanks. The committee is sending away three parcels to the soldiers each month, these being purchased from the funds. In addition a quantity of material is being purchased to be made into garments for refugees. A sewing bee will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, at Mrs O. Walker's home, commencing in the morning.
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE TENTH BIRTHDAY PARTY. The meeting of the Women’s Institute on Friday marked the tenth birthday. A cake was baked by Mrs A. Edmonds and iced by Mrs W. Dickens.' Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the late Mrs C. H. Hartley who was a member of the branch. An invitation was received to the 21st birthday of the Pahiatua branch of the Plunket Society. A crystal vase and posy were presented to Miss D. Rolls in view of her approaching marriage. Miss Hare was welcomed as a new member. Mrs Edmonds and Mrs Dickens received a vote of thanks for their work in connection with the birthday cake. The candles were lit by Mrs Weston and extinguished by Mrs M. Hull (the ritiring president), while the cake was retiring president), while the cake was dent. The competition winners were: Best bloom, Mrs G. M. Napier 1, Mrs A. Napier 2. Miss Jean Algie 3. Apple pie: Mrs Didsbury 1, Mrs E. Hutching: 2. Mrs E. McLean 3. The hostesses were Mesdames Hutchings. E, Seymour and Miss Z. Smith. The morning and the latter part of the afternoon were spent in sewing for refugees.
