BIDEFORD

FANCY DRESS DANCE SUCCESSFUL PATRIOTIC EFFORT. (“Times-Age” Special.) One of the most successful gatherings held in the Bideford district took place on Saturday night in the local hall when the residents of the district combined to hold a plain and fancy dress dance in aid of the Red Cross Sick and Wounded Fund. Visitors were present from all parts 'of the Wairarapa, and Masterton was particularly well represented. The following were the winners of the fancy dress competitions:—Best lady. Miss Mary Either (“Early Victorian’’): best man, Mr Jensen (“Cos- , ter"); mp'st original lady, Mrs R. Tatham ("Greater Production”); most original man. Mr Jack Groves ( •Knight of the Bath’’). The Lucky Spot competition was won by Miss P. Ross and Mr O. Williams. and a Monte Carlo competition was won by Mrs Donald Thompson and Mr Douglas Falloon. Mrs J. Nicholls won the Mystery parcel competition. The judge of the fancy dresses, Mrs W. Taylor, had a particularly hard task in making her awards, owing to the large numbers of excellent costumes. An excellent supper was provided by the ladies of the district. The music was supplied by Mrs Te Tau, and Mrs Douglas Falloon played the extras. Many novelty dances were held. As a result of the effort the sum of £l6 was raised, but more donations have yet to come in.
