RUGBY FOOTBALL
SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. PLAY OFF AT MASTERTON. At Memorial Park, Masterton, on Saturday next Carterton and Gladstone will meet in the final game for the 1940 senior championship. The second round ended with both teams scoring eighteen championship points, each team having beaten each other once. At the last meeting of the Rugby Union it was decided that a play off should take place on a neutral ground, a decision which was questioned by the Carterton and Gladstone clubs. After considering the requests of the two clubs concerned the Union decided to adhere to their decision and the game will be played at Masterton, preceded by a match between the Red Star and GJadstone third class teams at 1.30 p.m. ARMY TEAM v WAIRARAPA. ON AUGUST 10 AT MASTERTON. Arrangements have been finalised for a match between Wairarapa and the Army team at Masterton on August 10. The Army team will arrive in Masterton by the' mail train from Wellington on August 10. departing by rail car on August 11. During their stay in Masterton they will be entertained at a dance which is being arranged. In charge of an army officer, as manager, nineteen players will be the strength of the party. The whole of the proceeds, less transport and accommodation of the Army team, will be given to the National Patriotic Fund. The free list will be suspended. Admission charges will be gate Is 6d, stand Is, children sixpence.
