YOUTH RALLY
GATHERING OF MASTERTON BIBLE CLASSES PART IN UPLIFTING MANKIND. ALCOHOL AND NATIONAL EFFICIENCY. The St Matthew’s Parish Hall was the scene last night of an enjoyable Youth Rally, at which a happy rime was spent. The rally opened at 4.45 o’clock with a tea, which was much enjoyed, followed by a community sing of hymns under the able conductorship of Mr D. Allan Barns, with Mr H. Tiler at the piano and assisted with a fine orchestra. The chairman, Mr F. G. Rutter, introduced Mr Frank Stock, ex-president of the Wellington Sunday School Union, and the speaker took as his subject “Alcohol in its relationship to Social Uplift.” He challenged the youth cf today to play their part in uplifting mankind to a higher standard of living. Mr Stock, referring to alcohol and its relationship to physical efficiency, gave* famous men’s views against alcohol in its relationship to the realm of sport. Touching on alcohol in relationship to national efficiency, he gave the percentages of labour employed in the manufacture of strong; drink compared with those in other industries. As to alcohol in relationship to spiritual efficiency, he pointed out that people to be really true Christians must be temperate in all things and have a physically fit mind so as to think clearly of the meaning of spiritual things, which were the essentials of a Christ-like life. He said the Bible regarded temperance as total abstinance. The chairman thanked Mr Stock for his interesting address. The motion was carried by acclamation. It was pleasing to see about 200 young people in attendance, representing all the Bible classes of Masterton, namely, St Matthew's, Methodist, Knox Presbyterian, Lansdowne Prebyterian. Salvation Army, Baptist, Church of Christ, and Brethren, also Sunday School teacers and officers and friends. The rally was honoured by the presence of Major Ranson of the Salvation Army, Wellington, Mrs Brigadier Melksham of the Salvation Army, Melbourne, Australia, Mr A. J. Huston, Presbyterian Youth Organiser, of Palmerston North, Archdeacon E. J. Rich, and the Revs. H. S. Kings, and V. W. Joblin. Apologies for absence were received from the Rev John Davie, the Rev D. McNeur and Major Mahaffie. The committee responsible for the arrangements of the rally owe heartfelt thanks to Archdeacon Rich and members of St Matthew's Church for me use of the Parish Hall and to the Si Matthew's Bible Class members who so willingly arranged the tea. As many requests have come forward for other rallies of a similar nature to be held in the near future it is hoped that further rallies will take place at other churches in turn, to bring about a much more friendly feeling towards one another of the youth of today. It is hoped that others who care may enter into the social spirit of these rallies. An enjoyable rally was concluded by the singing of the National Anthem.
