STATE PRINTING OFFICE
NEW BUILDING TO PROCEED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The determination of the Government to proceed with the building of its new printing office in Wellington was expressed by the Minister in charge of Printing and Stationery, Mr Webb, during discussion on the Estimates of that department. He said the present building was overcrowded, dangerous in the event of an earthquake and uneconomical to work. Economies in the use of paper were suggested by Mr Forbes (Opposition, Hurunui) and by the Leader of the Opposition. Mr Hamilton. The Minister replied that all departments had been asked to economise, and already a saving of 25 per cent had been made. Members of Parliament had been asked to indicate papers which they considered could be curtailed. With stocks on hand, afloat or about to be shipped, the department had 12 months supply of paper in view. Ex-, plaining the increase of £50,000 in the vote for the office, Mr Webb said that the cost of paper had risen 130 per cent since the beginning of the war.
