WAIRARAPA COLLEGE TEAMS SENIORS WIN, JUNIORS DRAW. EXCELLENT STANDARD OF PLAY. Senior and junior hockey matches were played at Dannevirke yesterday between teams representing Wairarapa College and the Dannevirke High School. In both games, an excellent exhibition of hockey was witnessed. The weather was perfect and the ground was in splendid order. Wairarapa won the senior game by two goals, both scored by Kathleen Ross, to one. In the junior contest there was no score. Mr G. W. Morice was in charge of the Wairarapa teams, which returned to Masterton this afternoon. The main game opened with a run of even play, but Wairarapa eventually began a succession of attacks which resulted in several penalty corners against Dannevirke without result. A clean run by K. Ross followed by a hot shot put Wairarapa one up. Dannevirke, put on their mettle, made some strong attacks and were rather unlucky not to score, the Wairarapa backs not showing their usual strong defence though R. Steven, centre-half, was useful in breaking up attacks. A brilliant piece of fielding by K. Ross made at top speed and a run through most of the home team gave the spectators a thrill but the goalie made a good save. The spell ended with the score 1 -0. On resuming College made the pace hot. F. Baird and T. Saunders being prominent in several movements that looked dangerous, but the Dannevirke defence was sound, their backs frequently sending the ball out to the left wing where- H. Zady took charge and by speed and clever play put her side in the circle, Wairarapa having to concede several corners. Wairarapa's second goal was due to L. Wilton abandoning defence in favour of attack. She carried the ball right to the edge of the circle where a well-judged centre made an easy shot for K. Ross. From then till the end Wairarapa were mainly on defence and Dannevirke scored from a penalty corner. Encouraged by this success they made the pace hot but the final whistle sounded without further score.

The B game was rather in Dannevirke’s favour, but they failed to make use of their opportunities. The Wairarapa backs, particularly all three halves, put up very stubborn defence and the goalie, K. Finlayson, showed good judgment in coming out to meet the attack. In the forwards H. Callendar and R. Hanley showed up well, but combination was lacking. The result was a scoreless draw. The Wairarapa girls were hospitably entertained by their Dannevirke friends.
