INCREASE PRODUCTION

CAMPAIGN IN GREYTOWN PROGRESS REPORTS. SUBSTANTIAL SUPPORT FOR SCHEME. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a full attendance of the area representatives at the Fire Brigade Hall when reports -were received in regard to the proposed action to bo taken in the district to increase production. Mr W. G. K. Wiggins presided and Mr B. Roberts, M.P.. was also in attendance. Others present were Messrs G. Robinson, F. Hercock, W. A. Tate, F. C. Bunny, R. Field, H. McPhee. O. A. Cadwallader, G. Beu, H. Farley, D. Fairbrother. G. C. Maloney, R. O’Neale. S. C. Sheddon, C. Ingley, N. F. Skeet. From the reports received at the meeting there is every indication of good results being obtained. Every farmer in the district has been approached and in practically every case promises were given to increase production. Mr B. Roberts expressed his great satisfaction at the reports received. He explained the methods the Production Council desired' should be followed. The question of assistance through the dairy companies was discussed, and the procedure to be adopted is to be referred to the District Council. Mr G. S. Maloney reported that he had held a meeting with the men onsustenance in th? district and they had all expressed their desire to assist in every possible way. Mr Maloney said he had also met the members of the Workers’ Union and they were anxious to co-operate. Mr W. A. Tate stated that Mr Maloney had done very good work in this direction, and it was resolved that Mi Maloney be appointed to organise the labour available and that he be the link between the workers and the farmers. The outstanding offer was from the firm of T. Borthwick and Sons who, at their Moroa Plain farm intended, to sow 175 acres of barley and 25 acres of peas. Mr O'Neale reported that the Battersea settlers would put an extra 86 acres under cultivation. It is proposed that this effort be submitted to the District Council for approval and assistance. Mr N. F. Skeet reported that the farmers in his area were taking steps to cultivate more land, mostly for barley. oats and wheat. 1 Mr C. Ingley reported a most satisfactory effort in his area. Extra areas in oats, barley, turnips and wheat were to be planted. Mr R. Field reported that in his district extra crops of oats and wheal would be sown. Mr Wiggins reported that his area would be making extra efforts. One farmer would graze 30 extra bullock) and 100 sheep and extra areas of barley and turnips would be sown. Mr Bunny reported that efforts were being made by the small fruit farmer: to grow mangolds. It was also reported that: the presen scheme of production at the Papawai Pa would be increased. Several offers’were made of areas of land which would require to be stump ed. It was pointed out that these could be done under the 4B Scheme. It was stated that the present drive was being macle for land that could be utilised at once. It was agreed that these areas be brought under the notice of the Department's inspector. The New Zealand Farmers' Co-oper-ative Distributing Co. Ltd, Masterton wrote slating the willingness of the firm to assist in any way possible, and also offering the services of the office staff. This offer was gratefully accepted. When the question of circulars and office work was being discussed Mt Shedden and Mr Maloney agreed t< get (his work done. Mr Roberts remarked that the Greytown Committee appeared to be very fortunate in having the willing assistance of the school staff. The question of seed production was disctisscd and it was decided to advise farmers to utilise some of their crops for this purpose. The chairman was given authority t< call meetings are required.
