KOPUARANGA

SOCIAL CLUB LOAN TO GOVERNMENT. (“Times-Age" Special.) A meeting of the Kopuaranga Social Club was held at the residence of Mrs 5. J. Clarke, the president. Mr S. J. Clarke, presiding over a large attendance of members. A resolution was passed making , a loan of £5O free of interest to the New Zealand Government for the duration of the war and six months afterwards. It was decided to hold the sixth annual Settlers’ Ball on August 7. An energetic committee has the arrangements well in hand, and patrons are assured of an enjoyable evening. Music will be provided by Barnes’s Orchestra, and the proceeds will be donated to the Country Districts’ Sub-Centre of the Red Cross. The club intends to conduct a series of dances in the future in aid of the Country Districts' Red Cross. The meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Clarke. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE WINNERS OF COMPETITIONS. At the monthly meeting of the Kopuaranga Institute, the president (Mrs C. P. Jarrett) presided over a fair attendance of members. A letter in regard to the Paddy's Market was read and two members were appointed to help on the stall. A “Bring and Buy” stall will be held at the August meeting. The cooking competition for that month will be "a dish of sweets.” It was decided that a committee meeting be held at Mrs Clarke’s residence on Tuesday. August 6. The roll call, “What our husbands think of the Institute,” was answered by all present, and caused much amusement. After the business had been dealt with, a sewing bee was held, and several garments were mended and made to hand in to the Red Cross Society. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Clarke and Reside. The results of the monthly competitions were as follow: —Best bloom: Mrs Clarke. 1; Miss Wright, 2; Mrs Reside, 3. Thrift article (child's garment): Mrs Wright, 1; Mrs Jarrett, 2; Miss Wright, 3. The singing of the National Anthem brought the meeting to a close.
