GREYTOWN

PATRIOTIC WORK HOUSE EUCHRE PARTIES. (“Times-Age” Special.) The example set by the Humphries Street residents in conducting house euchre parties in order to assist with the raising of funds for patriotic purposes is now being emulated by other citizens of the town. Following a lead given by Mrs G. H. Hood, who has arranged two parties at her own place to demonstrate just what can be done in these efforts, other enthusiastic card players are arranging for a series of similar gatherings to be held in their own homes. The first of such was given by Mrs Harris, of Main Street, when a most enjoyable time was spent and the subscriptions amounted to £l. This type of effort is to be commended to those people who are elderly or who cannot render service in other directions. The function involves no outlay, supper being provided by the participants themselves. Mrs Hood would be pleased to supply details con- | cerning such parties. FIRE BRIGADE MONTHLY MEETING. \ The monthly meeting of the Greytown Volunteer Fire Brigade was held last night, when Superintendent J. Wood presided over a full attendance of members. Accounts passed for payment amounted to £6 19s 9d. The secretary reported that the Town Lands Trust had forwarded a grant of £2O. Special rates were fixed for the use of the meeting hall for patriotic purposes. The probation term of a new member was allowed to lapse. Mr R. Gray was appointed on three months’ probation. A' grant of £1 was made to the Mayor’s Patriotic Fund. An invitation to attend a social at Silverstream was accepted. The purchase of a hose mending tool was left in the hands of the Superintendent. * It was decided to combine with the Kia Toa Girls’ Club in holding a function for patriotic purposes. Personal Items, Mr H. C. Cook has resigned as a member of the Moroa Water Race Committee owing to failing health. Mrs H. T. Rees returned to her home today after several weeks in the Greytown Hospital. Mr R. Tilson, who has been in the Greytown Hospital for some weeks, returned to his home on Saturday, but it will be some weeks before he will be able to resume work. Raffle of Bicycle. The raffle of the bicycle donated by the Greytown Scout Committee resulted in the raising of £3O 6s for the Sick, Wounded and Distress Fund.
