COURSING
WAIRARAPA WINS CHALLENGE MATCH CONTEST AT AKURA ENCLOSURE. SOME SPLENDID PERFORMANCES. On Saturday in cold, boisterous weather before a moderate attendance of spectators, the challenge match for maiden class dogs between the Wairarapa and Hawke's Bay Coursing clubs was contested at the Akura Plumpton. The Archer Cup for open competitors was also decided during the afternoon. The former event was won by the local dog Democrat, which defeated Boston Chief in the deciding course. At the conclusion of the first round the local team had won four of the six courses, and looked like easy winners of the banner. But until the final course was decided the issue was in doubt, owing to the splendid running of Boston Chief. The final proved a runaway victory for Wairarapa. due to the brilliant performance of Democrat, which showed good speed and remarkable endurance.
The Archer Cup provided some excellent coursing among the open dogs. White Lie repeated her performance of three weeks ago by again winning in convincing style to defeat Ballaramaine in the final.
A feature of the afternoon's sport was the sound judging of Mr L. M. Archer, who made his first appearance in this capacity. Mr Archer judged his own cup contest in a very efficient manner. The hares ran strongly throughout the day and some very good ties were witnessed. Following are the results: —
