HARRIER ACTIVITIES
KIATERE CLUB W. EURNS WINS REWANUI CUP. BELL TROPHY TO W. MACDONALD A very enjoyable time was spent at the residence of Mr and Mrs A. Burns. ■•Tinakora" on the occasion of the inIvitation visit of the Kiatere Harrier Club. A large muster of both runners and entrusiasts attended and a very interesting race resulted in the contest for Mr R. Liverton's trophy, the Rewanui Cup. The course was a stiff one -oeing over steep, hilly, country, and as the going was very heavy. W. Burns, with a brilliant effort; prevailed very narrowly from W. Macdonald, who also found ! the heavy going to his liking. The Bell trophy went to W. Macdonald. The runners were despatched by Mr ,W. Ashworth the timekeeper. L. Bird was first away, followed by C. Summers. and 14 minutes later by J. L. Burns. W. Teahan led the middlemarkers. with D. Nelson, the holder of the cup. 5 secs behind. Then came the three MacDonalds, who were followed by W. Burns 20 seconds later. W. Burgess (off 1 min), and R. Greeks (from scratch). At the end of the first lap L. Bird still headed the field from J.' L. Burns, W. Burns, who was running very determinedly, was next, closely followed by W. MacDonald. Then at intervals came W. Teahan. W. Burgess. Al MacDonald. C. Summers, A. MacDonald. R. Greeks, and D. Nelson. W. Burns passed the two leaders halfway round the second lap, and went on to a well-deserved victory by 25 yards from W. MacDonald, . who must also be credited with a fine performance. W. Teahan ran well up to form for third place, and L. Bird, a first year runner, performed very creditably to finish in fourth place. W. Burgess who has been off the scene for some weeks, also ran well. Then came J. L. Burns, closely followed by Al MacDonald, A. MacDonald and C. Summers.

The juniors ran'over one lap of the senior course and in a keenly contested race, F. Sexton performed splendidly to win from I. Summers, who must be credited with a game effort, with the scratch man N. Jacobsen in third place. The following are the detailed results: —F. Sexion (2.50). 27.42, 1; I. Summers (4.0). 29.7, 2; N. Jacobsen (ser)„ 31.53. 3. Fastest times, F. Sexton, 26.2, 1; N. Jacobsen. 27.23. 2; I. Summers, 28.37, 3.
rtunners and supporters were then entertained at afternoon tea after which everybody enthusiastically joined in a community sing. The outing was brought to a conclusion with the presentation of the trophies to the winners by Mr R. Liverton who congratulated the club on its fine pack of runners.
Mr A. L. Askew, the club's president, thanked Mr R. Liverton for his generous donations of trophies, and Mr and Mrs A. Burns for their invitation. Next week there v/ill be a rim from the Epiphany Church at the'invitation of Mr and Mrs A. L. Askew. There will be open handicap races for both seniors and juniors for trophies donated by Messrs J. Barnes and W. Ashworth. These races will start at 2 p.m. sharp. MASTERTON TRAINING RUN. On Saturday members of the Masterton Harrier Club held a training run in preparation for the provincial championships. The trail followed the river bank to the Te Ore Ore bridge where it led over flat country around Te Ore Qre. The going was very heavy and provided a strenuous run. Mr Hadley Wilson, a former member of the Christchurch Club, has joined the Masterton Club and had his first outing on Saturday. Next Saturday the event will be a 6.1 mile sealed handicap, after which the team for Wellington will be selected.
