OPTIMIST CLUB

WEEKLY GATHERING; MOVING PICTURES SHOWN. Chief Smiler Murray Daniell presided over a good attendance at the weekly tea of the Masterton Optimist Club held in the Y.M.C.A. last night, the usual good-fellowship being in evidence. Sherrif E. J. Esler was in good form and collected many fines, with such a beneficial result to the "cat" that it overflowed. Optimist S. L. Hatch led in a brief song session, Optimist Trevor Hicks being at the piano. Mr H. Hope Cross entertained members with moving pictures of a canoe trip he had made with Optimist Hatch down the 'Wanganui River, which was narrated by the latter. The beautiful bush-clad gorges, broken with many water-falls, in the upper reaches of the river were all clearly depicted. The local Centennial celebrations were also shown in detail and proved highly interesting. The local timber milling industry was also' featured, in an excellent short and was a good example of modern photography. Mr Cross also showed shorts of New Zealand’s thermal wonders, including splendid views of the Fairy Springs, etc. Some of his technicolour films were very beautiful.

On the motion of Sherrif Esler, Mr Cross was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, and Optimist Hatch was also thanked for his remarks concerning the Wanganui River trip.
