A largely-attended meeting called by the Red Cross Society was held in the Town Hall last night for the purpose of co-ordinating Martinborough’s war efforts. Mr D. C. Pryor presided., and explained that with the establishment of the Lady Galway Patriotic Guild, there was a danger of overlapping, and that some of the objects were outside the scope of the Red Cross Society. After discussion a committee was set up to supervise all war efforts in the town and district, and the following were appointed to act on the committee: —A representative of the Borough Council, a representative of the Featherston County Council, Messrs H. Hardingc. C. Michell, R. Feist, G. C. Wallis. D. C. Pryor, the Rev F. O. Ball and the Rev J. Mann A strong ladies’ committee was appointed to organise sewing and knitting circles. A depot is to be opened in the town where articles of clothing for refugees and for the sick and wounded, and also articles for inclusion in soldiers’ parcels may be left. The completed articles will be packed and dispatched, the refugee material to the Lady Galway Guild, and the other to the Red Cross headquarters. HOCKEY TEAM The following is the Martinborough team to play Excelsior at Martinborough on Saturday commencing at 3 p.m.: Goal, J. Beveridge; full-backs. R. Lumley, P. Duffy; halves, J. McCardle, M. This match should give the Martinborough team further experience, and although the\eleven is not the same as last Saturday it is thought that they will give a good account of themselves. Last week the centre forward played a good game for her first attempt, as also did the centre half and left half. The two full backs gave an exceptional display for their first game and are to be complimented for the many saves they made. The team is a very enthusiastic one and should go a long way. Home and School. On Tuesday evening a meeting of parents and school staff was held for the purpose of bringing about a closer relationship between the home and school, and to arouse interest and enthusiasm in the education of the children. After a talk by the headmaster, Mr D. C. Pryor, those present expressed themselves strongly in favour of a series of such meetings, and it was decided to hold the same once a month. Supper was partaken of, and those present took the opportunity of discussing their children’s welfare with the class teachers. Euchre Tourney.
