MANGAPOKIA STREAM

NEW BRIDGE AND IMPROVED ROAD. PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT POLICY. Referring this morning to the construction of a new concrete bridge over the Mangapokia Stream and the improvement of the road in the immediate vicinity of the bridge, Mr S. M. Rapson, District Public Works Engineer, said the plans approved provided for five-chain radius curves at each end of the bridge. The section of the road adjoining the. bridge would thus be brought up to a standard likely to meet the requirements of the district for many years. Other proposals put forward, he said, reduced the curve at the south end of the bridge to a threechain radius one, which considerably reduced visibility and the general safety of the curve. The Main Highways Board's policy was to erect a bridge which would be wide enough for traffic requirements for many years, while the bridge itself would probably last up to a hundred years. It was easier to improve other portions of the road as the traffic demanded it without lowering the general standard of the new permanent structure. The Main Highways Board, he said, had approved proposals to improve a curve eight chains to the south of the bridge under the present scheme.
