BRIDE-TO-BE HONOURED

GATHERING AT PARKVALE. There was a large attendance at the Parkvale Hall on Saturday evening when Miss D. Roberts was tendered a parcel evening in honour of her approaching marriage to Mr B. Mclsaa'c, South Island. The time was spent in cards and dancing, the music for dancing being supplied by Mrs Ashton and Mr Harding (Masterton). The card prizewinners were as follow: Ladies, Mrs Phelps and Miss D. Jenson. Men, Mr Bayliss and Mr C. Downes. The Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss L. Hooper and Mr M. Rose.

At a suitable interval Mr E. T. Bliss, referred to the high esteem in which Miss Roberts was held throughout the district, and called upon the guest of honour to open up the many gift parcels, which she did amid applause. Mr Mclsaac, on behalf of Miss Roberts, suitably replied. A most enjoyable gathering was brought to a close at midnight with the singing of -Auld Lang Syne.” Obscene Language. J. Martin, a visitor to Carterton, was charged at the Carterton S.M. Court this morning before Mr W. C. M. Sorensen, J. P.. with having used obscene language in a public place on Saturday. He pleaded guilty and was fined £5 and ordered to pay same in two weeks, in default seven days’ imprisonment. Poison For Rabbits. Carter’s Reserve. Gladstone, will be closed to the public for one month from June 30. as it is proposed to lay poison for rabbits. R.S.A. Ball. The annual ball of the Carterton branch of the R.S.A. will be held in the King’s Theatre, tonight. • A capable committee of “Diggers” and an energetic ladies' committee have all details complete for the function. Good music and an excellent supper are assured. As half the net proceeds will go to rhe Red Cross Society’s funds there should be a large attendance. Burst Water Pipes. Saturday’s heavy frost caused many pipes in the water service throughout the borough to burst. Even hot water services were thrown out of commission. In shady positions frost lay on the ground till nightfall. School Basketball Matches. The Carterton District High School primary basketball teams journeyed to Martinborough to try conclusions with the Martinborough School girls. Honours were even, the Carterton A team winning their match by 16 goals to 13. an*l the B team being defeated by 12 goals to 10. The games were fast and very enjoyable.
