RED CROSS APPEAL EFFORT BY MAORIS. ("Times-Age” Special.) The Maoris of Martinborough and district held a social, dance and euchre party in the Town Hall last evening in aid of the Red Cross Appeal, when there was a fair attendance and a pleasant time was spent. The winners of the euchre were: — Ladies: Mrs Lister, 1; Mrs Johns, 2. Men: Mr Herrfck, 1; Mr T. Stumbles, 2. The eiderdown quilt was won by Mr Mel. Francis. The Red Cross Fund will benefit by £l.O 14s 6d as the result of the social. Hockey. The recently-formed Ladies’ Hockey Club will play its initial match against a team of Featherston ladies on Saturday. The following is the team: —Goal, Mrs Apro; full-backs, R. Lumley, P. Duffy; halves, M. Flynn, M. Clarkson, A. Mills; forwards, N. Lester, B. Boyd. M. McKinley, L. McCardle, F. George. Emergencies: J. Beveridge, W. Herrick and P. Trounce. Personal. The funeral of the late Charles Skill, son of Mr and Mrs C. W. Skill, of Martinborough, took place yesterday afternoon, when an exceptionally large concourse of mourners from all parts of the district testified to the respect in which deceased was held. The Rev. F. O. Ball conducted services at the residence and graveside, and the Boy Scouts, of which deceased had been a member, assembled at the cemetery and paid their tribute of respect to his memory. The Martinborough Borough Council, Martinborough Horse Sports Club, Boy Scouts, District High School, Bowling and Croquet Club, Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, and Miniature Rille Club forwarded wreaths.
