FEATHERSTON
PATRIOTIC APPEAL MEETING OF COMMITTEE. (“Times-Age” Special.) A meeting of the Featherston Patriotic Appeal Committee was held in Anzac Hall last evening. Mr J. W. Card was in the chair. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Wakeley, Rea, Sharp, Feast, Lowell Mr and Mrs Lawson, Messrs McKenzie and Halpin. It was reported that the Borough Council had decided to reduce the fee for Anzac Hall for soldiers’ entertainments to £l. Arrangements were made for the cost of gift parcels from the Borough for the troops to be paid out cf Patriotic Funds. A committee for entertaining the soldiers in the Tauherenikau Military Camp was formed consisting of Miss Card (chairman), Mesdames Sharp, Carlyon, McKenzie, Riddiford, and Harkness, Messrs Robbins, Shepherd, Allen and Lawson, with power to delegate their work and appoint a secretary. Mr N. C. C. Shepherd was appointed organising secretary, and a vote of thanks was passed to the retiring secretary, Mr G. M. Browne. It was decided that at functions conducted by this committee any person leaving the hall must pay to re-enter. After the meeting Miss Card addressed those present in connection with the Lady Galway Patriotic Guild meeting held in Wellington recently, which she attended. It was decided that all present should form a committee with Miss Card chairwoman and Mrs N. C. C. Shepherd as secretary, this to be the local committee of the Lady Galway Patriotic Guild. Miss Card read a circular and explained the work for refugees to be taken up by this guild. League of Mothers. A meeting of the League of Mothers was held y'esterday afternoon in the Parish Hall, Mrs Arch Clark presiding over a very good attendance. A letter read from Lady Elliot expressing thanks for the support received from the Featherston branch for the Shop Day in Wellington on June 6. A very interesting address on advertisements was given by Mr A. S. Kilsby. He was accorded a hearty ■vote of thanks. The hostesses were Mesdames Wakely, Blaiden and Ruane. Entertainment of Soldiers. A meeting was held in the Kahutara Hall on Wednesday night by the settlers of tire district, when arrangements were made to entertain five local soldiers who are in camp. Girl Guides’ Good Work. The New Zealand Girl Guides have sent to the New Zealand headquarters 22,500 garments, 208 blankets and cot covers, ,and in 10 days have raised £936 for the air ambulance. Guides throughout, the Empire were asked to subscribe £20,000. The sum raised in two months was £45.000.
