CARTERTON

COUNTY AFFAIRS YESTERDAY'S MEETING. / (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council was continued yesterday afternoon. It was decided to erect a small bridge on the Admiral road, which will do away with the inconvenience caused by water accumulating on the road during storm periods. A letter was received from the Hon H. T. Armstrong, Minister of Housing, in connection with a rural housing scheme for the county. After discussion it was decided to hold the matter over until the next meeting of the Council. Mr D. McGregor was appointed to attend meetings for the purpose of finalising matters in connection with the Centennial celebrations. The Highway Board's approval of the tender of Messrs Rhodes and McPherson for the erection of a one-span bridge over the Makahaka Stream between the Ruamahanga River and Gladstone was received and the work is to be proceeded with. The action of the overseer in replacing seven culverts in a group on Flatpoint Road was approved. It was resolved that a pipe culvert be put in on Hughes Road. LEAGUE OF MOTHERS

MONTHLY MEETING. There was an exceptionally large attendance at the monthly meeting of the League of Mothers held in St Andrew's Hall yesterday. The president (Mrs R. H. Every) welcomed Mrs Stanley Harris, the speaker for the meeting. She was presented with a shoulder spray. Mrs Harris was the first Wellington Provincial secretary of the League _of Mothers and is now assistant Dominion secretary.

The president welcomed Mrs Ardrey and Mrs Daglish from the Eastbourne and Milton branches respectively. A letter from Mrs Hercock, who is a patient at the Masterton Hospital, was much appreciated. Mrs Every read a letter and literature she had received from Mrs Barrer. Masterton. in connection with the British Orphans scheme. Mrs V. Robinson delighted members with the singing of two songs, members joining in the chorus of the second one, which had a strong patriotic appeal. Miss V. Sorenson was the accompanist. The hint for the month was given by Mrs Hurndell, and the thought by Mrs Paterson.

The president, read a letter from Mr W. Martin, headmaster of the Carterton District High School, to the effect that a Home and School Association had been formed for the purpose of providing funds for a library and other vital requirements, the annual, subscription fee being Is. There was a splendid response to the president’s request for voluntary donations to procure wool for comforts for the Carterton members of the Expeditionary Force. Members were pleased to have the opportunity of knitting comforts from wool donated by several members of the League. Mrs L. Knutson offered the use of her home every Friday afternoon for workers to meet and sew or knit for Red Cross purposes. Mrs Stanley Harris gave an interesting address on kindergarten work and the advantages of having a creche at the League of Mothers’ meetings. Various ways of amusing children were demonstrated, the first essential being to gain the confidence of the child. The speaker mentioned how large pieces of unbleached calico with nursery rhymes depicted in bright colours could be spread on the floor providing amusement to tiny tots. An attractive room always had an appeal to the young. In this respect railway and shipping posters, and coloured pictures from magazines could be placed round the walls. Children loved variety, and. therefore, it was necessary to have frequent changes of pictures, etc, and introduce new ideas. It was always well to remember never to do anything for a child that he could do for himself. Threading of coloured beads on bootlaces with a knot at the end, cutting out pictures colouring and pasting them in books, building blocks, pegs in a seamless tin. jig-saw puzzles, match boxes for playing cars and trains, coloured bags containing beans were all easy and inexpensive ways of holding the child's interest. The speaker mentioned the desirability of children being taught to respect their possessions and to tidy up after their games were over.

Mrs Tyler expressed appreciation of Mrs Harris’s instructive address which was heartily endorsed by members. On the motion of Mrs L. Wood it was decided that at future meetings the

League should have a creche, where babies and small children could be left, and a committee comprising the following members was formed: Mesdames Leete, Gregor, C. Porter, Keenan, L. Woods and K. Goodin. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. Church Service. A Church of England service will be conducted at Longbush on Sunday at 2.30 p.m. “Parcel Evening.” A reminder is given of the “parcel evening" and dance to be held in the Parkvale Hall tomorrow evening, in honour of the approaching marriage of Miss Daisy Roberts.
