TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD
MEETING IN MASTERTON. COMPETITION WINNERS. The Masterton Townswomen’s Guild held a meeting yesterday afternoon in the Y.M.C.A. Hall. The president (Mrs Bennett) presided over a large attendance of members and visitors, and the meeting opened with the singing of the Ode, the reciting of the Aspirations and the prayer for peace. Mrs Judd, as the guild representative, gave a report of the work carried out on the Patriotic Committee, and thanked those who had assisted her in collecting funds for the Sick and Wounded Appeal. Mrs Judd reported that guild members had made pay covers and hussifs. An appeal was made for articles suitable for soldiers’ parcels, which could be left in the Women’s Rest Room, Dixon Street, on or before June 20. Mrs Lyttle and Mrs Copp, as guild representatives on the Red Cross Committee, reported that many members were working at the Sewing and Knitting Circles of the Red Cross and St. John Ambulance Brigade. Numerous gifts and parcels were collected from guild members and will be forwarded to the Red Cross Society and St. John Brigade. A Paddy’s Market will be held on August 2, and members were asked to provide articles. Mrs Duckworth gave an interesting talk on conditions 25 years ago in England, and referred to the marvellous work the women of England performed during the Great War. Beautiful homes were turned into hospitals and rest homes for soldiers. Mrs Duckworth urged members not to harbour thoughts of fear or defeat as fhis would not help the British soldiers in their fight for the just cause of love, faith, right and liberty. Afternoon tea was served and then Mrs Bennett introduced. Miss Maddever and presented her with a shoulder spray. Miss Maddever gave a demonstration on tablet weaving. Fancy weaved belts of coloured silks were displayed. Miss Maddever then told of her V.A.D. experiences in Edinburgh during the last war, where she worked in canteens and munitions factories. The competitions resulted as follows:—Coat hangers: Mrs Pickering, 1; Mrs Millar, 2; Mrs Snowsill, 3. Canadian date cake: Mrs Taylor, 1; Mrs Coe, 2; Mrs Lyttle, 3; Mrs Donovan. 4.
