HOUSEWIFE’S NOTEBOOK
SOME USEFUL HINTS. When giving a dog a piece of cooked beef be sure that the wooden skewers have been removed. Gas can be saved when cooking corned beef (to be eaten cold) m the following way: Wash and place the beef in a saucepan of cold water. Add a tablespoon of vinegar, bring gradually to the boil, then boil for 10 minutes. Then remove from stove, wrap saucepan in sugarbags or hessian, and put a weight upon the lid to keep in the steam. Leave all night. Beef cooked in this manner will retain its full flavour.
China can be cemented by making a thick solution of gum arable in warm water, and stirring in plaster of Paris until quite thick. Apply with a brush to the broken edges, and press them together; this cement is white. To set drawings, take three parts of milk to one part water. Place the drawing face upwards upon a tray and pour the milk and water completely over it. Then hang up the drawing to drain. You will find that it will be as secure as a print. The correct way to beat an egg: The whole egg with a fork, the white with a knife, and the yolk with a spoon. When a large fruit cake carries the hopes of the careful cook, precautions must be taken against burning it at the bottom and on the sides. This may bo avoided by placing the caketin (with uncooked cake in it) into a larger tin, which has a good, even layer of salt on the bottom. Then pack the sides with salt. A little extra trouble, but well worth it for a special cake, and you’ve still got your salt:
If moths are in ' a carpet spread a damp cloth over the part and iron it dry with a hot iron. The heat and steam will destroy the worms and eggs.
