WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT ALFREDTON. AMBULANCE PROPOSAL SUPPORTED. (‘■Times-Age” Special.) Mrs S. Edmonds presided over an excellent attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Alfredton Women's Institute. The meeting opened with the Ode to Friendship, the singing of “God Defend New Zealand,” and the prayer for peace. It was announced that the birthday dance would be held but that there would be no items, as there had been in other years. Various members donated the ingredients for the birthday cake, in order to keep down expenses. Members were asked to bring 3d each to the next meeting to keep the fund going for soldiers parcels. Members decided to support the proposal to purchase and equip an ambulance on behalf of the Institutes of New Zealand.

Competitions for the month drew excellent entries. The results wore as follow: —Best bloom. Mrs Dickens. 1; Mrs Didsbury. 2; Mrs Seymour. 3. Eggless ginger sponge: Mrs S. Edmonds. 1: Mrs G. Napier, 2; Mrs Dickens. 3. Garment for refugee boy (old or new material) Mrs Seymour, I; Mrs A. Napier, 2; Mrs Dickens and Mrs E. McLean. equal, 3.

In a competition, jumbled names of members of Parliament, Mrs E. Hutchings and Mrs J. Spring were equal. Mrs Hutchings winning in the draw for first place.

After a delicious afternoon tea served by the hostesses. Mesdames Hull, Dickens and R. Low. the meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem.

The patriotic stall was in charge of Mesdames W. Rolls and G. Napier, and was well supported.
