A Brilliant Win
Jumping brilliantly throughout. All Irish won the Great Northern Steeplechase yesterday from end to end. All Irish was bracketed on the totalisator with Baldric, and the combination was favourite. All Irish was followed in the early running by Forest Glow and Mahala, with Enjoyment and Hirangi also handy and Baldric last. Baldric was still in the rear when he baulked at the fence near the mile post in the last round, and All Irish led up the hill the third time, five lengths clear of Hirangi, who was two lengths ahead of Mahala and Bells of Bow. All Irish continued to gallop strongly, and he was clear over the last two fences to win by eights lengths from Mahala, who battled on solidly to beat Hirangi by two lengths. Biform was a long way back fourth, and Forest Glow next. Bells of Bow looked like being in the picture when he fell at the second fence on the hill in the last round, at which stage he was third. Enjoyment fell at the fence near the six furlong post in the second round. Baldric showed no dash, and was well back when he baulked. Smiling Thru fell at the first fence on the hill in the second round. Favourites Well Beaten. The favourites. Silver Quex and Valmint, were well beaten in the King George Handicap, at Auckland yesterday. the three-year-old Brazen Bold winning nicely. Tybalt and Raratonga were badly away, Mai de Mer and Aero King being the early leaders from Jayola, Silver Quex, and Brazen Bold. Crossing the top Aero King and Silver Quex were together in front. Aero King leading into the straight from Silver Quex, Brazen Bold. Flying Acre, Valmint, and Mai de Mer. Brazen Bold came through at the distance, and he won by half a length from Aero King. Flying Acre fought on solidly to be a length and a half away third, and Paddy the Rip, finishing strongly, was fourth, followed by Silver Quex. Brazilian. Young Paddon, and Valmint.
