A SPECTACULAR DUEL. CLARION CALL BEATS BRIGADORE.

The Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter meeting concluded today in fine weather, but the absence of a holiday affected the attendance and there was a considerable decrease in the turnover, compared with the holiday last year. Racing was interesting, and there was a spectacular duel between Clarion Call and Brigadore in the Wanganui Steeplechase before Clarion Call got the upper hand and won the event for the third time. In the principal flat race, the Empire Handicap, there was a surprise result when Dictate won, but he scored decisively in a very soundly-run race. Gold Dale, opposed by only three others in the open sprint, had no difficulty in winning easily. The June Hurdles was won by Hunting Lore, who thus completed a double for Mr L. H. Collinson, who had .won the Century Hurdles the first day with Old Surrey. The going was in first-class order and faster than on the first day. The totalisator figures for the day were £14,624 10s, compared with £26,505 10s 'for eight races on the holiday last year, a decrease of £ll,BBl. Third Wanganui Steeplechase.

Clarion Cal] won his third Wanganui Steeplechase yesterday without much difficulty in the end. He made al] the running and the only horse that had a chance with him at any stage was Brigadore. Brigadore took him on over the last mile and,a half, and they jumped fence for fence. Early in the duel Clarion Call did not jump one or two of the brushes over-well, and was also over plenty of ground. In the lasi five furlongs he had the measure of his rival, specially when the latter put in a poor jump at the second last fence. The remainder were outclassed.

Peerless for Australia.

Peerless who has been spelling at Nelson since Ihe last New Zealand Cup meeting at Riccarton, is to be sent to Sydney shortly, where she will be put into training. As a three-year-old the Beau Pere —Prestige mare was the best of her sex and ran some good races against the colts. She was then taken to Sydney by the Trentham trainer, T. R. George, but failed to show form and was sent back to New Zealand.

Form Upset.

Form was upset in the Provincial Handicap at Dunedin yesterday, as Balmenter, who ran a bad race on the first day, won from Capricious, who also failed badly in the Birthday Handicap. Second Innings was a fair third, and Night Wings next. Alma faded out with three furlongs to go.
