Wins at Fourth Time of Asking.
After running second in the race on throe successive occasions. Valmint scored a popular victory in the Cornwall Handicap at Auckland on Saturday for which he was an each-way favourite. Valmint is the third generation of his family to win the event. Valmint. Royal Appellant and Kelly were quickly prominent, and Bronze Moth then ran to the front to lead along the back, just clear of Jayola, Calorie, Valmint (rails), Namara, Cheval de Voice. Erlick and Royal Appellant. Going along the back. Erlick ran up quickly on the outside and he assumed command after passing the half-mile to lead into the straight clear of Valmint. Jayola. Royal Appellant and Saccone. who was moving up on the outside. Vamint was in front just after passing the distance.
The Hutt Valley Harrier Club was successful in regaining the Sanders Cup from the Masterton Club in the annual contest held at Masterton on Saturday.,by 121 points to 210. Masterton was unfortunate in being able to field only 4 men. owing to military enlistments, but the men who started filled first, second, fifth and seventh places. A total of 16 men were sent away by the starter. Mr J. J. Hunter, to follow the trail over two laps of the championship course. From the start Ro\ Shaw (Masterton) sot a gruelling pace to hold first position all the way and secure a well-deserved victory from R. Wyeth (Masterton). Wyeth ran a good race to tag Shaw all the . way. M. Sellar and G. Ready ran steadily to fill fifth and seventh places for Masterton. Of the visitors T. Shaw, McGrath .and M. Patterson were to the forefront, filling third, fourth and sixth places. After the race the Masterton Club entertained the visitors and supporters to afternoon tea, where Mr J. J. Hunter extended a warm welcome to the Hutt men and .congratulated the club on its success.
