ROAD CYCLING
WAIRARAPA CLUB. TWENTY MILE RACE WON BY SIMPSON. On Saturday the Wairarapa Amateur Cycling Club held a 20-mile race to Mt Bruce school and back, starting and finishing between the two bridges in Queen Street. The time was not as fast as it might have been, considering the excellent weather conditions. G. Simpson and J. Heaven were the first away, riding from a mark of 3.30 mins. A minute later they were followed by D. Birnie'and M. Graham while the scratch men. R. Copp and K. Woollet left 21 mins, later. The positions of the riders remained the same through the race, the limit men making full use of the handicap. In the sprint for the line. G. Simpson beat J .Heaven by about half-a-length. Later camo D. Birnie, followed a few seconds later by Copp and Woollett; those two riders fought out a close finish for the fastest time honours, the place going to Woollett b.y about a wheel.
The placings were:—G. Simpson (3.30) 1; J. Heaven (3.30). 2; D. Birnie (2.30) 3. Fastest time —K. Woollett, scr. 56min 25secs, 1; R. Copp (scr). 56.725ec5.
