“NO SAFER PLACE”
MONEY IN POST OFFICE. STATEMENT BY FINANCE MINISTER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. “The Emergency Powers to be introduced by the Government will not affect the title to any amount deposited in the Post Office Savings Bank,” said the Minister of Finance, Mr Nash, when his attention was drawn on Saturday to the unusual number of people who had made, withdrawals from the Wellington branch of the bank that morning.
“While all our resources must be used to help to feed and clothe our own soldiers, to help the United Kingdom and to defend our own land and homes it is not the intention to take any money whatever from any person’s account,” said the Minister.
“There is no safer place in the Dominion for money than the Post Office Savings Bank,” said the Minister. “The repayment is at all times guaranteed by the Government. To withdraw the money is the height of foolishness. It must either be placed in some other bank or stored at home. If it is in the Post Office Savings Bank there is no possible chance of losing it, as long as there is a Government in the country. If it is taken out there is danger of loss by fire, theft, or by other means.”
