ST. MATTHEW’S BALL

GAY GATHERING IN MASONIC HALL. FIFTEEN DEBUTANTES PRESENTED The annual ball of the St Matthew’s Old Girls’ Association, which was held in the Masonic Hall last night, was a most successful gathering, there being an attendance of about 200 dancers. Effectively decorated with large bowls of chrysanthemums and coloured berries, arranged around the hall, and greenery and with the lamp shades displaying the school colours of green and gold, the hall presented a gay and colourful scene. Old Girls of St Matthew’s School were responsible for the decorations.

Fifteen debutantes were presented to Mrs Max Cleghorn, Principal of St Matthews. The debutantes were: Misses Mary James, cream silk velvet; Joan Wylie, white net over' taffeta; Joyce Mulvaney, white chiffon; Margaret Heckler, white sheer; Mary Free, pale pink ninon over taffeta; Betty Potter, parchment taffeta; Pa trine Van Praagh, white silk net over satin; Diana Thompson, oyster satin; Marie O’Connor, white silk over taffeta; Erina Meredith, white sprigged taffeta; Margaret Bevan, white Swiss organdie with pale blue velvet sash; Una Fuller, pale pink sprigged chiffon; Phyllis Brodrick, white net; Joan Wilton, taffeta backed satin with lace; Phyllis Groves, white georgette. Mrs L. Maunsell, president of the St Matthew’s Parents’ Association, and Mrs Cleghorn were the hostesses. Pool’s Blue River Dance Band provided the music. The savoury supper was given by the parents. Much of the credit for the success of the ball was due to the untiring work of the secretary. Miss Dorrie Todd, and of the ball committee. Misses Leslie Beetham, Elaine Prior, Rhoda Burling and Patricia Gill.
