WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
MEETING AT HAMUA. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a fair attendance of members at the May meeting of the Hamua Women's Institute. After the “Ode to Friendship" had been sung and the "Prayer for Peace" read, the president (Mrs Hobbs) read the motto, which was “The reward of one duty is to fulfil another." A letter was received from Mrs Austin thanking the institute for the part it had taken in the gift received by her.
The report of the recent council meeting was unavoidably held over until the next meeting.
The competitions for the month resulted as follow: —Balaclava: Mrs Cavanagh, 1; Mrs Hobbs, 2. Best bloom: Mrs Hobbs, 1; Mrs White. 2. The competition for the June meeting is: Four pieces of shortbread, which will be packed and sent to the troops overseas. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Johansen and Thomson, after which the singing, of the National Anthem brought the gathering to a close. MOTHERS’ UNION FIRST BIRTHDAY PARTY. The first birthday of the Eketahuna Mothers' Union was celebrated on Thursday. After the usual church service at 2.30 p.m., conducted by the Rev. L. Ives, members and friends adjourned to the Sunday School where afternoon tea, provided by the members, was dispensed. The hostesses were Mesdames Murray-Tynsley. H. Higginson. M. J. Gaskin and D. Scott. A letter of apology for non-attendance was received from the Ven. Archdeacon and Mrs Rich (Masterton).
The birthday cake was donated byMiss M. Anderson, who was thanked for her generosity. Mrs Murray-Tyns-ley was also thanked for arranging the floral decorations. Mrs F. C. Turner was called upon to light the candle on the cake, Miss Anderson to extinguish it, and Mrs L. Ives to cut it. An amusing competition arranged by Mrs Tolley, was then held, Mrs W. Olsen being the winner of the prize, which was kindly donated by Mrs J. Tolley. This was followed by two elocutionary items by Mrs A. Gyde and songs by Mrs P. Bouzaid, the accompaniments being played by Miss M. Wilson. These were greatly enjoyed and warmly applauded. A few congratulatory remarks by the Vicar, followed by the singing of the National Anthem, brought a pleasant gathering to a close.
St. Cuthbert’s Church vestry is arranging a social to be held in the Sunday School on June 20.
Personal. Mrs L. Cantwell, Nelson, is a guest at the Vicarage. Universal National Service. The Eketahuna branch of the Returned Soluiers’ Association will hold a public meeting in the Town Hall, Eketahuna, on Thursday night next for the purpose of considering the adaption of compulsory universal national service. All citizens are urged to attend. Presbyterian Church. There will be a Presbyterian Church service held at Eketahuna at 3 p.m. tomorrow, and at 7 p.m. at Alfredton.
