RAIDS IN CANADA
ON POSSIBLE FIFTH COLUMNISTS MEETING IN CELLAR BROKEN UP. TRUCK LOADS OF EVIDENCE COLLECTED. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright MONTREAL, May 23. Moving against possible “fifth columnists,” the Royal Canadian Mounted Police widely raided homes and offices of high officials of the National United Party, collected six truck loads of evidence, and disrupted a Fascist meeting in a cellar. A member told the Quebec Legislature that at least 26 “fifth columnists” hold high office in the Province.
HOME GUARD FORMED OTTAWA, May 24. The Minister of Defence, Mr Rogers, announced that the Government are establishing immediately a force, the “Veterans’ Home Guard,” for more adequate protection of military property and other uses. It will consist of 12 companies of exservicemen, each commanded by a major. The age limit will be 50. Pay and allowances will be similar to those in the armed forces.
