RED CROSS APPEAL

STILL GREATER EFFORT NEEDED. STOCK DRIVE DONATIONS. Greater efforts are still needed from Masterton if the town is to donate its share of the £250,000, the joint Council of the New Zealand Red Cross Society and Order of St. John is endeavouring • to raise for the benefit of those who are sick, wounded or distressed on account of the war. The Central School Parents’ Association Dance on Saturday brought in a substantial donation to the funds'and other organisations are urged by the local committee to remember the Red Cross-St. John appeal when arranging functions. The Prime Minister has urged us to put forth our best effort and this is one direction in which everyone can help. Donations are continuing to come in freely for the Stock Drive and among many others the committee has been offered 52 two-tooth wethers tor the sale. This is a splendid gift and should encourage others to follow the good example. Any persons willing to give donations of £5 so that the local committee may claim the £5 (offered contingent on 49 others being .found) should state that the donation is for that purpose when forwarding the amount to the office in Page’s Buildings. Anyone who listened to Colonel Bowerbank broadcasting from 2YA last evening must realise the necessity for giving freely to this fund. No sacrifice that we at home make can equal the sacrifice of our men.

At time of going to press today Masterton’s total was £BB2 17s.

OTHER DONATIONS. ACKNOWLEDGED BY MAYOR. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, has received the following donations to the sick and wounded fund: —David Donald, £l5 15s; Neil McKay and Sons, £lO. BOROUGH STAFFS. CONTRIBUTION OF £l6. The Town Clerk, Mr G. T. O’Hara Smith, has advised the St. John and Red Cross appeal committee that the cutside and inside staffs of the borough were making a contribution of £l6 to the sick and wounded fund.
