CRIPPLED CHILDREN
ACTIVITIES OF WAIRARAPA BRANCH.
BUSIEST YEAR SINCE INCEPTION.
The past year of the Wairarapa branch of the Crippled Children Society has been much more active than any previous year in the branch's history, states the annual report. It was the first year during the whole period of which the welfare officer, Mrs S. N. Kilgour, had been actively engaged. The great variety of the work she had keen called upon to do was indicated in her report and the results of her activities had been most encouraging.
“Twenty-one new cases have been registered during the year, making the total at the end of the year eightyone,” the report states. "These are distributed over the district as follows: — Martinborough, 5; Greytown, 6; Masterton, 39; Pahiatua, 6; Featherston, 4; Carterton, 8, Eketahuna, 10; Mauriceville, 3. Regular visits every three months have been made to all cases, at their homes, and it has been the practice of our welfare officer, besides assisting parents and crippled children, to give advice and encouragement, and to distribute small parcels of books, toys and sundry small necessities which might help to make the cripple’s life and environment a happier one. During the year, the society has been able to give a large amount of assistance in a number of different directions. Educational and vocational training has included help with College expenses, books, materials for dressmaking, a correspondence course in typing and the provision of further special bed desks for the Masterton Hospital. The removal or lessening of disabilities suffered has resulted from assistance with X-rays, dental treatment, medical and specialist attention. The provision of clothing for a number of cases, eight pairs of boots and shoes, artificial limbs, an invalid chair. andTbed and mattress has done much to better the lot of some of the children.” <■
