Let Sleeping Dogs Lie—In Comfort.

Concern at the growing number of apparently ownerless dogs to be seen in Masterton streets at night was expressed yesterday by a prominent member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. She was of opinion that householders showed lamentable apathy in allowing dogs to roam the streets. It was not muchtrouble, she said, to shelter a dog on a winter’s night by giving him a box to sleep in and a sack, for warmth.

Badminton Matches Suspended. At a special meeting of the Wellington Badminton Association last night it was decided to' suspend inter-club competition matches, owing to a serious shortage of shuttles. In view of the war situation it was not believed by the Wellington Association that an emphatic protest against the total import of shuttles was justified. The Wairarapa Association will give the matter of local competitions further consideration at a meeting of the management committee next week. Belgian Red Cross.

Prompt action has been taken by the National Patriotic Fund Board to assist the Belgian Red Cross, whose needs have increased as the result of the latest turn in events in the Low Countries. At yesterday’s meeting of the board, presided over by Lord Galway. it was decided, at the request of the Joint Council of the Order of St John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society, to make available £2500 to the Belgian Red Cross. The cheque was made out immediately after the meeting and during the afternoon was handed to M. Armand Nihotte, Consul for Belgium in New Zealand.

Pipe Band To Be Equipped. It* is a high tribute to the music of Scotland that, even among the Sassenachs, the skirl of the pipes is recognised as the most stirring of all martial music. That this is so is shown by the anxiety of commanding officers to attach pipe bands to units of the New Zealand expeditionary forces. At the request of Colonel Wilder, in command of the Wellington-Hawke's Bay Battalion of the Third Echelon, the proceeds of the Saint Andrew Society gathering on Saturday evening (which arc to go to the Wellington District Patriotic Fund) will, be specially earmarked for application towards the provision of pipes to equip a pipe band for his unit. Not only Scots will applaud this plan, and will give the desired support by attending the dance on Saturday evening.
