GREYTOWN
RED CROSS SOCIETY APPEAL FOR FUNDS. (“Times-Age” Special.) Despite the rough weather there was a good attendance at the meeting held in the Borough Council Chambers last night when the appeal for funds for the Red Cross Society was launched. The Mayor (Mr A. W. Horton) presided. Several apologies for absence were received. The chairman stated that any entertainment held would be free from amusement tax. It was decided to make a house-to-house canvas. Miss Higginson (assisted by the nursing staff) offered to canvass East Street, West- Street and the cross streets leading to these, Humphries Street, Wood Street, Kempton Road and Cotterville Street. Other canvassers were appointed as follows:— Jellicoe and McMaster streets and Stock Road, Mrs Richards; South end of Main Street. Mrs A. Johnson; North end of Main Street,, Mesdames Horton and Stevens; Kuratawhiti, Mole and Udy streets, Mrs J. F. Thompson; Ahikouka, Mrs T. Orr; Ward’s Line and Battersea, Mrs Dyson; Fabian’s Road, Miss E. Haycock; Martinborough Road, Mrs T. R. Ingley; Cross Line, Moroa, Mrs V. Kempton; business area, Main Street, Mr E. Maddison; Papawai, Mrs Jury; sports bodies. Mr J. F. Thompson. The offer of Mrs Higgins to assist was accepted with thanks. It was decided to open a Red Cross Depot, the local Red Cross branch to make the arrangements. A “Paddy’s Market” is to be held in the Town Hall on Friday, June 7. The following stall holders were appointed with power to add: The Junior Red Cross, Exhibition stall, Convenor, Mrs G. R. Jury; cakes, Mrs Beu; sweets, Mrs Shedden; produce, Mrs Horton, jumble A.D.T., Miss Higginson; side shows. R.S.A.; afternoon tea, Mrs Bunny. The secretary and treasurer were authorised to open an account in the Post Office Savings Bank and the chairman, treasurer and secretary are to operate the same. Greytown Soldiers. The Greytown members of the 3rd Echelon will leave Greytown on Friday next by the 2.20 p.m. train.
