FEATHERSTON
COUNTY COUNCIL CONDITION OF DRY RIVER ■INTAKE. ("Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Featherston County Council held at Martinborough yesterday the matter of the Dry River Water Race intake was considered by the council. It was decided to advise the Martinborough Borough Council that the county council was concerned with the condition of the intake and to urge that the matter be seen to as soon as possible. The county engineer, Mr H. F. Toogood submitted a comprehensive report concerning work carried out during the month and about prospective works. In the course of his report the overseer, Mr T. Davis reported that watertables had been cleaned out, and general maintenance work carried out in various ridings. WOMEN’S DIVISION ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Parish Hall on Thursday, Mrs Wakely presiding over a good attendance. Several apologies for absence were received. One new member was elected and one resignation accepted. The annual report was presented by Mrs Wakely and adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patroness, Mrs D. H. S. Riddiford (re-elected); president, Mrs E. M. Wakely (re-elected), vice-presi-dents, Mesdames G. W. Brandon, G. Lowell and W. Charles (re-elected); secretary, Mrs W. J. Feast; treasurer, Miss'J. Goodrick (re-elected); auditor Mr. J. G. McKenzie (re-elected); delegates to Provincial Council, the president, secretary and Mrs A. R. Robbins; officers for the gardening circle, president, Mrs E. M. Wakely, secretary and treasurer, Mrs W. J. Feast. The points prizes for the year in the Circle were won by Mrs. C. H. Rea with Miss Goodrick second. The hostesses for the day were Mesdames G. Lowell and J. Holland. Votes of thanks were passed to Mr J. M. G. McKenzie (auditor), the Press and the retiring secretary, Mrs W. H. Sadler. WEDDING ’ SADLER—FRANKS. A wedding of local interest was celebrated at St Barnabas Church, Mt Eden, Auckland, the contracting parties being Mavis Aileen Franks, only daughter of Mr and Mrs W. Franks, of Auckland, and late of Featherston, and Wilfrid Belmont Sadler, second son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Salder, ol Tauherenikau. The bride, who was escorted by her father, wore a becoming gown of white ninon over taffeta, with full skirt and train. Her veil was a short circular one with the usual orange blossom. She carried a bouquet of white roses and cactus dahlias. The bridesmaids were Miss Nancy Sadler, sister of the bridegroom, and Miss Marjorie Cuthbert. They wore smart frocks of chenille spotted green silk net over taffeta and carried bouquets of pale gold roses and dahlias. The bridegroom was attended by Mr Norman of Tauherenikau and Mr Len Phillips, of Auckland. Mrs Franks, mother of the bride, wore a dress of pale teal charmeuse with hat to tone and carried a posy oi red roses. A reception was held in the Mt Eden Tea Kiosk when Mrs Franks received the guests assisted by her sister, Mrs C. D. Young. The bridegroom will enter camp to join the Third Echelon on May 17. CROQUET CLUB EUCHRE TOURNAMENT. Despite the boisterous weather which prevailed, there was quite a good attendance at the Featherston Croquet Club's weekly euchre tournament which was held at the residence of the President, Mrs R. T. Saunders. Mrs. A. Bolland carried off the ladies’ first prize with Mrs G. Lowell second. In the men’s division MrS M. Wilson was first and Mr Geo Hyland second. Girls’ Club Gathering. The attendance at the Anglican Girls’ Club on Thursday night was not as good as usual, due no doubt to the inclement weather, but a very enjoyable time was spent by those present. Personal items. Mrs E. M. Wakely has returned home after having been absent in Hawke’s Bay for the past month. Whilst away Mrs Wakely attended the Unwin-Russell wedding at Wairoa. Mr and Mrs V(. H. Davis and their two daughters are visiting'Nelson. Miss Rose Goodrick, of New Plymouth, is the guest of Mrs Richard Foss, South Featherston. Mr and Mrs T. Gallus, of Palmerston North, are visiting Mrs Gallus’s parents, Mr and Mrs T. G. Hardie. Mr and Mrs T. Seward, late of Masterton, have taken up their residence at Lake Ferry, Mr Seward having recently taken over the FeatherstonLake Ferry Mail Service.
