HOLLAND ON GUARD

WHOLE DEFENCE SYSTEM MOBILISED

INCREASED 1 ENSIGN.

STATEMENT BY MR CORDELL HULL.

Holland’s whole defence system is now mobilised for action at a moment's notice. Mr Cordell Hull, United States’ Secretary of State, states that latest information indicates an increase in tension in the Netherlands.

American subjects, Mr Hull added, had long ago been advised to leave the country. The United States had ordered its battle fleet to remain in Hawaiian waters indefinitely instead of returning to America. This is believed to be concerned with the position of the Netherlands' East Indies if Holland is invaded. The aerodrome at Amsterdam is to be closed to foreign planes from Friday. A hopeful sign is that some of the restrictions on railway services are to be relaxed.
