MARTINBOROUGH

FAREWELL GATHERING PRESENTATION TO MR G. SIMPSON (“Times-Age" Special.) A very pleasant gathering took place in the local school when the pupils of the District High School tendered a farewell dance to Mr Geo. Simpson, who will leave shortly to take up a position in Gisborne. A party of ex-pupils went along as a “surprise party” and added to the enjoyment of the dance. Dancing was indulged in and after supper had been served, Mr Pryor, headmaster, presented the swimming certificates won dqring the year. Following this, Murdie Hancox. on behalf of all ex-pupils, made feeling reference to Mr Simpson’s departure and wished him and Mrs Simpson every happiness and success in their new sphere of life. He then asked Mr Simpson to accept a fountain pen as a token of appreciation of his good work. Peter Craig then asked • Mr Simpson to accept a leather suitcase from the present pupils. Mrs Simpson was presented with a shoulder spray. The singing of “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows” and cheers followed, after which Mr Simpson thanked the pupils for their gifts, and said he was very happy to have been associated with such a good lot of girls and boys. He had expressed a desire to stay with them but after 7 years he had had to move on.

The Monte Carlo was won by Ruby Lumley and Murdie Hancox, and a competition by Norman Alpe and Betty Blackwell. The singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and "God Save the King" brought a very happy gathering to a close.

The swimming certificates won during the year were presented as follows:—880 yards: Gordon Jamieson. Gwyn Lister, Gladys Wright. 220 yards: Peter Jamieson, Ronald Mills. Stanley Trounce. 25 yards: Gordon Hardie.
