BOARD OF GOVERNORS MEETING NEW MEMBERS WELCOMED. PIPE BAND’S PERFORMANCES. 1 The chairman, Mi-. W. R. Nicol, presided over the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa College Board of Governors held last night. There were also present Mrs. J. L. Hair. Messrs. A Owen Jones. F. C. Daniell. E. Hanley J. D. O’Connor, G. C. L. Dickel. F. M. Whyte, L. T. Daniell and the principal Mr. G. G. Hancox. The chairman extended a cordial welcome to the newly-elected members. Messrs Whyte and Dickel, and congratulated Mr. F. C. Daniell on his re-election.
A telegram was received from the Prime Minister, Mr. P. Fraser, thank ing the board for its expression ol sympathy in the death of Mr. Savage. The mayor of Pahiatua, Mr. S. K. Siddells, wrote conveying the Pahiatua Borough Council’s appreciation of the presence of the college pipe band at the Pahiatua Centennial celebrations. It was stated that the Govern-or-General had expressed great pleasure at the band's performances, and had expressed the wish that the boys be given a day's holiday during the term for their meritorious performance. A letter was received from the secretary of the National Patriotic Fund Board relating to the collection of scrap metal by the children. No action was taken in the matter. • In the course of his report. Mr. Hancox stated that the average weekly attendance for the last five weeks had been 468.5, 485.7. 491.7. 481.8. and 478.7 The attendance at the evening school generally had been satisfactory. There] were forty-five boarders at present if. i residence at College House. The Anzac Day service was held in the Assembly Hall on April 24, the speakei being Mr. R. Whyborn, president of the Wairarapa Returned Soldiers’ Association. The pupils subscribed £3 4s. 6d. towards poppies for the college wreath. As a result of the revision of marks two additional passe: had been granted in the University Entrance, and three in the School Certificate examinations. The organisation of winter games had been completed, and in some cases competitions had commenced. The college pipe band had assisted at the Pahiatua Centennial celebrations on April 5, and at the Martinborough celebrations on April 6. The annual meeting of the Old Girls' Association was held on April 15. Captain Dr. Bramwell Cook, an ex-pupil of the old high school gave the pupils an instructive address on some of his experiences in India, on April 15. Acting Pilot-Officer Rex Daniell visited the college on April 16 and had been given a fitting farewell. Top-dressing of the cricket wickets and other areas had been carried out. There had been a good yield of vegetables in the garden, and potatoes were now being dug. There was an urgent need for additional bicycle accommodation, and the corridors of the brick building were leaking badly, concluded Mr. Hancox.
The resignation of Mr. J. H. Gardiner, A.M.1.E.E., instructor in electrical wiring theory, was received with regret. It was decided to send Mr. Gardiner a letter of appreciation of his services. Mr. N. G. Massey, of Masterton, was appointed to take Mr. Gardiner’s place. The secretary, Mr. H. M. Boddington, stated that Mr. R. Savage, Education Department architect, would visit the college shortly. A motion of appreciation of the eight years' service given to the board by Mr. L. J. Taylor was passed, the chairman stating that Mr. Taylor had been, chairman of the board for a period oi five years, from 1934- to 1938. Reference was also made to Mr. W. H. Saunders's two-year period of service. Mr. Hancox reported that a farewell would be given Major C. J. Williams and Lieutenant H. H. Hollow at the college this afternoon.
