SOLDIERS AT PLAY BEAT LOCAL FOOTBALL TEAM. (■'Times-Age” Special.) A large party of signallers of the Second Echelon now in camp at Tauherenikau. were in Greytown over the week-end. On Saturday afternoon they had a game of football against a local team, the Signallers winning by 24 points to 19. After the match, the soldiers were the guests of the Greytown Football Club at a dinner. In the evening, a large party attended the pictures. On Sunday, some of them played golf on the local links. STABLEFORD COMPETITION. There was a large attendance at the Greytown links on Saturday afternoon. The first round of a stableford competition for the vice-president's trophy was played. In the bogey match T. Nelson led, 2 up. then came S. C. Shedden and N. McLeod, all square, G. Te Whaiti, 1 down, J. W. Tate, G. Brunton, K. Nix, H. Bull and C. Charles, each 3 down. K. Nix, S. Shedden and A. Oakey have had their handicaps reduced. The first round of the ladies’ Challenge Cup was played on Saturday, the results being as follow:—Mrs. Pope, score 100, handicap 36, total 64, 3 points; Miss Booth. 102, 36, 66, 2 points; Mrs. Gid. 92. 18. 74, half point; Mrs. J. Jury, 93, 19. 74, half point. KICKED BY HORSE YOUNG MAN INJURED. A young man named Eric Merwood Bennett, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Bennett, Main Street, received injuries to the right side of his face and head when he was kicked by a horse on Saturday. It appears that he went to catch the horse and it swerved round and kicked out at him. He was admittedw to the hospital and it is reported that there is an improveemnt in his condition this morning. Personal Items. Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Knell have returned to Greytown after having spent a few days in Wellington. Mrs. A. Stuart had the misfortune to sprain her ankle -on the Greytown Links on Saturday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. E. Maddison returned to Greytown on Saturday, after a holiday spent in the Nelson district. Mr. K. Woodley, of the Post Office staff, has commenced his annual leave. Mr. W. Kilgour recently had a foot crushed under a tractor wheel, and has been admitted to the Greytown Hospital for treatment. Poppy Day. The full quota of 300 poppies allotted to Greytown were all sold before midday on Friday. School Meeting. Although there will be no election for a school committee, the householders’ meeting will be held at the Greytown School this , evening, when the report for the past two years will be presented. After the general meeting, the new committee will elect its chairman and will then deal with the applications for the position of caretaker.
