A Popular Win. One of the most popular wins of the current racing season was that of the two-year-old Phaleron in the Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes at Awapuni. Phaleron is owned by Dr. A. McGregor Grant, vice-president of the Auckland Racing Club, who had not previously enjoyed a classic win. although ho has raced horses for many years. Dr. Grant, who was a successful amateur rider, has confined his attention mainly to jumpers and ho would no doubt, derive considerable pleasure from the victory of Phaleron. who was purchased in the hope that ho might prove a classic winner. .Phaleron, who was turned out in splendid condition by R. S. Bagby, is by the English horse Phaleron Bay. by Phalaris from Brodick Bay, b.v Swynford from Rothesay Bay. b.v Bayardo from Anchora. Phaleron Bay is three-quar-ter brother to Miracle." who was unbeaten as a two-year-old, and in two years' racing won £14,607 in slakes. He is also closely related to Fairway, winner of (ho St. Leger. Eclii.se Stakes and Jockey Club Cup. two and aquarter miles, and £42.722 in stakes. Columba, dam of Phaleron. is by Chief Rider, from Dovelet. by Maltster from San Dove, by San Francisco from Grand Dove, by Grand Flaneur.
