BATTLE AT SEA
! ADMIRALTY STATEMENT PROMISED i WITHIN FEW HOURS i FALSE GERMAN CLAIMS DENIED. NO ALLIED BATTLESHIP DAMAGED. News is still awaited of the naval battle off the coast of Norway, Daventry states. Until this action has ended, no details can be given. It is believed that it will not be more than a few hours before a full statement can be made. A German allegation that two battleships and two cruisers had been severely damaged by bombs has been denied by the Admiralty, which states that no battleship lias been damaged and that two cruisers have received very slight damage from splinters. Another German ship, a vessel of 7000 tons, has been torpedoed. It was carrying coal to Oslo. This is the fourth German ship to be sunk by a British submarine in the last two davs.
GERMAN REPORT AIR ATTACK ON ALLIED SHIPS. ADDITIONS TO INVADING FORCES (Received This Day. 12.15 p.m.) LONDON. April 9. A Berlin radio message announced that Gerrnsm planes from Norwegian bases attacked a British and French ■naval detachment west of Bergen tonight and first reports showed that bombs hit many ships, including two battleships and two heavy cruisers. Quiet reigns in Denmark and Norway. Further strong German forces are entering both countries, unhindered by the enemy and according to plan. The radio message added that German planes from Denmark are also operating against Ihe British naval forces. The announcement claimed that one ship was on fire and another listing heavily.
